Comprehensive Literacy Assessments

A comprehensive Literacy Assessment at Early Literacy Labs offers far more than a quick screening—it provides a complete, research-informed picture of your child’s reading, writing, and spelling development.

Led by literacy specialist Nicole Chick, these assessments are designed to uncover the why behind your child’s literacy challenges and strengths. Whether you’re navigating a potential diagnosis like dyslexia or seeking clarity before starting individualized support, we offer thoughtful, data-driven insights that can guide next steps with confidence.

Our Personalized & Research-Based Assessment Approach

Our assessment process is intentionally thorough and child-centered. We combine standardized and informal measures to create a clear understanding of your child's literacy profile—what's working well and what may need support.

Each assessment is conducted 1:1 with Nicole Chick, who brings years of experience and deep knowledge of the Science of Reading to every evaluation. Depending on your child's age and needs, areas assessed may include:

  • Phonological processing (how your child hears and works with sounds)
  • Orthographic mapping (how your child connects letters and sounds in memory)
  • Decoding accuracy and reading fluency
  • Listening and reading comprehension
  • Vocabulary knowledge
  • Spelling (encoding)
  • Foundational written expression skills

Our goal it's to understand your child as a learner. Sessions are conducted in a calm, supportive setting designed to put students at ease. Just like our instruction, every Literacy Assessment is uniquely designed for your child. We take into account any previous evaluations and focus on the specific questions and concerns you have, so the results give you the clear, meaningful answers you've been looking for.

Who Should Consider a Literacy Assessment?

A comprehensive assessment can be helpful for students in kindergarten through high school, especially when families:

  • Have persistent concerns about reading, spelling, or writing despite classroom instruction
  • Suspect dyslexia or another language-based learning difference
  • See signs of frustration, avoidance, or low confidence around literacy tasks
  • Want a clearer picture before committing to tutoring or intervention
  • Need documentation to advocate for school-based support, including IEP or 504 plans
  • Have received vague school screener results that don't fully explain their child's needs

The Difference a Comprehensive Literacy Assessment Makes

When it comes to helping your child thrive, knowledge is power.

A full literacy assessment goes beyond identifying difficulties—it reveals what your child needs to succeed. You’ll receive clear, objective insights paired with actionable recommendations that help eliminate guesswork and guide targeted instruction.

These insights can also empower you to advocate more effectively with your child’s school team. Rather than wondering why things aren’t improving, you’ll have a roadmap—based on data, not assumptions. This early, informed approach can prevent years of frustration and build a foundation for confident, supported learning.
